I spent last weekend in a garage that smelled of old leather and fresh rubber, watching a friend dial in a 1967 Porsche 911S that he'd just finished restoring. He wasn't chasing numbers on a dyno. He was chasing a feeling—the way the car talks to you through the seat, the steering wheel, the way it settles into a corner when you trust it. That's when it hit me: buying a car like that isn't a transaction. It's a marriage of taste and memory. I've been thinking a lot about buyer psychology lately, especially in the premium automotive space. On paper, people buy specs: horsepower, torque, 0-60 times, lap records. But in practice, they buy identity. A collector doesn't park a 250 GTO in his living room because it's fast. He parks it there because it represents a moment in time, a piece of his own story, or a version of himself he wants to be true. The same logic applies to how we approach financial decisions around these passions. Whether it's a classic car, a rare watch, or a weekend property, the emotional pull is real. But the smartest buyers I know treat that emotion like a compass, not a map. They let it point them in the right direction, then they do the hard work of pricing, risk, and liquidity before they sign. Here's what I've learned from watching both collectors and investors navigate this space: 1. Know the difference between price and value. Price is what you pay at auction. Value is what you feel every time you turn the key. Don't confuse the two. 2. Buy the best example you can afford, not the cheapest one that fits the budget. The gap in maintenance, provenance, and joy is wider than the gap in price. 3. Have an exit plan before you enter. Even if you never sell, knowing your floor changes how you negotiate. 4. Don't let the herd define your taste. The best purchases I've seen were the ones that made no sense to anyone except the owner. I'm not a car dealer, and I'm not a financial advisor. I'm just someone who likes to understand how people think—about machines, about money, and about the stories they want to tell. If you're in Austin and you've got a project car that's more therapy than transport, I'd love to hear about it. Because at the end of the day, the best investments are the ones that make you feel alive when you look at them. And that's a kind of return you can't put on a spreadsheet.
